Lucknow, Jan. 21: They are 16 and 17 year olds, studying in class 11. They live in the posh bungalows in Indira Nagar colony, belong to well-to-do-families and drive aro-und on motorbikes that have been suitably modified to look swanky. Two days ago, these five friends were arrested by the police for speeding. During interrogation, the boys finally spilled the beans — they had stolen over 40 mobile phones in the past three months because they needed easy money to pamper themselves and their girlfriends.
The police, acting on their tip-off, arrested their three other friends and recovered 13 mobile sets and a gold chain form their possession. The boys admitted that they were inspired by the recent blockbuster Dhoom and had even modified their motorbikes to look like the ones shown in the film. According to Lucknow SSP Navneet Sikera, the boys — Anurag Bisht, Rajan Sheikh, Vivekjit Bhattacharya, Anurag Srivastava and Avinash Jaiswal — were so inspired by Dhoom that they had even started sporting actor John Abraham’s hairstyle in the film.
Talking to reporters, Rajan Sheikh disclosed their modus operandi. All five of us moved around on three bikes. We looked around for people who carelessly carried their mobile phones and we would then speed past them while the two sitting on the pillion would snatch the phone, he said nonchalantly. The mobiles stolen by the Dhoom gang — as they called themselves — were sold to Avinash who would then replace parts of the mobile set and sell them off to unsuspecting customers
