I am here posting few ghazals of one of my favourite poets, Ahmad Faraz



ab ke ham bichhRe to shaayad kabhii KhvaaboN meN mileN
jis tarah suukhe hu’e phuul kitaaboN meN mileN


(bichhRe : part company; Khvaab : dreams; suukhe : dry)

DhuuNDh ujRe hu’e logoN meN vafaa ke motii
ye Khazaane tujhe mumkin hai KharaaboN meN mileN


(ujRe : ruined; motii : pearls; mumkin : possible; Kharaab : blemish)

tuu Khudaa hai na meraa ishq farishtoN jaisaa
donoN insaaN haiN to kyuN itne hijaaboN meN mileN


(farishtoN: angels; hijaab : veil)

Gham-e-duniyaa bhii Gham-e-yaar meN shaamil kar lo
nashaa baRhtaa hai sharabeN jo sharaaboN meN mileN


(Gham-e-duniyaa : mondane sufferings; Gham-e-yaar : sufferings due to beloved; shaamil : incorporate; nashaa : intoxication; sharaabeN : wines)

aaj ham daar pe kheNche gaye jin baatoN par
kyaa ajab kal vo zamaane ko nisaaboN meN mileN


(daar : gallows; ajab : surprise; zamaane : era; nisaaboN : benchmarks )

ab na vo maiN huN na tuu hai na vo maazii hai “Faraaz”
jaise do saaye tamannaa ke saraaboN meN mileN


(maazii : past; saaye : shadows; tamannaa : desire; saraab : illusion, mirage)

usne sukuut-e-shab meN bhii apnaa payaam rakh diyaa
hijr kii raat baam par maah-e-tamaam rakh diyaa


(sukuut-e-shab : silence of night; baam : terrace)

aamad-e-dost kii naviid kuu-e-vafaa meN aam thii
maiN ne bhii ik chiraaG saa dil sar-e-shaam rakh diyaa


(aamad-e-dost : arrival of friend; naviid : good news)

shiddat-e-tishnagii meN bhii Ghairat-e-maikashii rahii
us ne jo pher lii nazar maiN ne bhii jaam rakh diyaa


(shiddat-e-tishnagii : intensity of thirst; Ghairat : pride; maikashii : drinking)

dekho ye mere Khvaab the dekho ye mere zaKhm haiN
maiN ne to sab hisaab-e-jaaN barsar-e-aam rakh diyaa


(barsar-e-aam : in public)

us ne nazar nazar meN hii aise bhale suKhan kahe
maiN ne to us ke paaNv meN saaraa kalaam rakh diyaa


aur “Faraz” chaahiiye kitanii muhabbateN tujhe
ke maaoN ne tere naam par bachchoN ka naam rakh diyaa

tujhse bicchaR ke ham bhii muqaddar ke ho gaye
phir jo bhii dar mila hai usii dar ke ho gaye

phir yuN hu’aa ke Ghair ko dil se lagaa liyaa
andar vo nafrateN thiiN ke baahar ke ho gaye

kyaa log the ke jaan se baRh kar aziiz the
ab dil se mahv naam bhii aksar ke ho gaye

ai yaad-e-yaar tujh se kareN kyaa shikaayateN
ai dard-e-hijr hum bhii to patthar ke ho gaye

samjhaa rahe the mujh ko sabhii nasehaan-e-shehar
phir raftaa raftaa Khud usii kaafir ke ho gaye

ab ke na intizaar kareN chaaragar kaa ham
ab ke gaye to kuu-e-sitamgar ke ho gaye

rote ho ek jaziira-e-jaaN ko “Faraz” tum
dekho to kitne shah’r samandar ke ho gaye

varnaa itne to maraasim the ke aate jaate

shikvaa-e-zulmat-e-shab se to kahiiN behtar thaa
apne hisse kii ko’ii shammaa jalaate jaate


(shikvaa-e-zulmat-e-shab : lamenting about the darkness of the night)

kitnaa aasaaN tha tere hijr meN marna jaanaaN
phir bhi ik umar lagi jaan se jaate jaate

jashn-e-maqtal hi na barpa hu’aa varnaa ham bhii
paa-bajolaaN hii sahii naachte gaate jaate


(jashn-e-maqtal : celebration at gallows; paa-bajolaaN : chained)

uskii vo jaane usse paas-e-vafaa thaa ke na thaa
tum “Faraz” apnii taraf se to nibhaate jaate

maiN ke phir dasht-e-rafaaqat kaa safar kar aayaa
kyaa kahuuN kitnii aziiyat se guzar kar aayaa

har ko’ii ham se milaa umr-e-gurezaaN ki tarah
vo to jis dil se bhii guzraa vahiiN ghar kar aayaa

tum ne ek sang uthaayaa mere aaiine par
aur har shaKhs ko maiN aaiina-gar kar aayaa

mujhse kyaa puuchte ho shah’r-e-vafaa kaisaa hai
aise lagtaa hai saliiboN se utar kar aayaa

sirf chehre hii agar kurb ke aaiine haiN
kyuN na maiN dil kaa lahuu aaNkh meN bhar kar aayaa

ab jo is shah’r kii taqdiir ho, maiN to logoN
dar-o-diivaar pe hasrat ki nazar kar aayaa

ham to samjhe the muhabbat kaa payambar hai “Faraz”
aur vo be-meh’r bhii to haiN, hunar kar aayaa

kyaa aise kam-suKhan se ko’ii guftaguu kare
jo mustaqil sukuut se dil ko lahuu kare

ab tau hameN bhi tark-e-maraasim kaa dukh nahiiN
par dil ye chaaHtaa hai ke aaghaaz tuu kare

tere baGhair bhi tau Ghaneemat hai zindagii
Khud ko gaNwaa ke kaun terii justujuu kare

ab tau ye aarzuu hai ke wo zakhm khaa’iye
taa-zindagi ye dil na ko’ii aarzuu kare

tujh ko bhulaa ke dil hai wo sharminda-e-nazar
ab ko’ii hadisaa hi tere ru-ba-ruu kare

chup chaap apni aag meiN jalte raho “Faraz”
duniyaa tau Gharz-e-haal se be-aabruu kare

kam-Sukhan : who doesn’t talks much
mustaqil : continuously
sukuut : silence
marasim : relationships
aaghaaz : beginning
justujuu : try
aarzuu : wish
sharminda : shamed
ruu-ba-ruu : face to face
be-aabruu : deprive of honour

kaThin hai raahguzar thoRii duur saath chalo
bahut kaRaa hai safar thoRii duur saath chaalo

(kaThin : difficult; raahguzar : path)

tamaam umr kahaaN ko’ii saath detaa hai
maiN jaantaa huuN magar thoRii duur saath chalo

nashe meN chuur huuN maiN bhii tumheN bhii hosh nahiiN
baRaa mazaa ho agar thoRii duur saath chalo

ye ek shab kii mulaaqaat bhii Ghaniimat hai
kise hai kal kii Khabar, thoRii duur saath chalo

abhii to jaag rahe haiN chiraaGh raahoN ke
abhii hai duur sahar thoRii duur saath chalo

tavaaf-e-manzil-e-jaanaaN hameN bhii karnaa hai
“Faraz” tum bhii agar thoRii duur saath chalo

dil giraftaa hii sahii bazm sajaa lii jaaye
yaad-e-janaaN se ko’ii shaam na khaalii jaaye

raftaa raftaa yahii zindaaN meN badal jaate haiN
ab kisii shah’r kii bunyaad na daalii jaaye

mas’haf-e-ruKh hai kisii kaa ke bayaaz-e-Hafiz
aise chehre se to bas faal nikaalii jaaye

vo muravvat se milaa hai to jhukaa duun gardan
mere dushman kaa ko’ii vaar na khaalii jaaye

be-navaa shah’r kaa saayaa hai ke mere dil pe “Faraz”
kis tarah se merii aashuftaa Khyaalii jaaye

ab ke tajdiid-e-vafaa kaa nahiiN imkaaN jaanaaN
yaad kyaa tujh ko dilaayeN teraa paimaaN jaanaaN


(tajdiid : renewal; imkaaN : possibility; jaanaaN : beloved; paimaaN : promise)

yuuN hii mausam kii adaa dekh ke yaad aayaa hai
kis qadar jald badal jaate haiN insaaN jaanaaN

zindagii terii ataa thii so tere naam kii hai
ham ne jaise bhii basar kii teraa ehsaaN jaanaaN

(ataa : given by; basar : to live; ehasaaN : favour)

dil ye kahataa hai ki shaayad ho fasurdaa tuu bhii
dil kii kyaa baat kareN dil to hai naadaaN jaanaaN


(fasurdaa : disappointed)

avval-avval kii muhabbat ke nashe yaad to kar
bepiye bhii teraa cheharaa thaa gulistaaN jaanaaN


(avval-avval : the very first)

aaKhir aaKhir to ye aalam hai ki ab hosh nahiiN
rag-e-miinaa sulag uThii ki rag-e-jaaN jaanaaN


(rag : veins; miinaa : wine-holder; jaaN : life)

muddatoN se ye aalam na tavaqqo na ummiid
dil pukaare hii chalaa jaataa hai jaanaaN jaanaaN


(muddat : awhile; tavaqqo : hope)

ham bhii kyaa saadaa the ham ne bhii samajh rakhaa thaa
Gam-e-dauraaN se judaa hai Gam-e-jaanaaN jaanaaN


(Gam-e-dauraaN : sorrows of the world)

ab kii kuchh aisii sajii mahafil-e-yaaraaN jaanaaN
sar-ba-zaanuu hai ko’ii sar-ba-girebaaN jaanaaN


(sar-ba-zaanuu : forehead touching the knees; sar-ba-girebaaN : lost in worries)

har ko’ii apanii hii aavaaz se kaaNp uThataa hai
har ko’ii apane hii saaye se hiraasaaN jaanaaN


(hiraasaaN : scared of)

jis ko dekho vahii zanjiir-ba-paa lagataa hai
shahar kaa shahar huaa daaKhil-e-zindaaN jaanaaN


(zanjiir-ba-paa : feet encased in chains; zindaaN : prison)

ab teraa zikr bhii shaayad hii Gazal meN aaye
aur se aur hu’aa dard kaa unvaaN jaanaaN

(unvaaN : start of chapter/title)

ham ki ruuThii hu’ii rut ko bhii manaa lete the
ham ne dekhaa hii na thaa mausam-e-hijraaN jaanaaN


(mausam-e-hijraaN : season of separation)

hosh aayaa to sabhii Khvaab the rezaa-rezaa
jaise u.Date huye auraaq-e-pareshaaN jaanaaN

tum bhii paabastaa-e-zanjiir-e-hiinaa ho jaanaa

Khalq kii sang_zanii merii Khataao.n kaa silaa
tum to maasuum ho tum duur zaraa ho jaanaa

ab mere vaaste tariyaq hai ilhaad kaa zahar
tum kisii aur pujaarii ke Khudaa ho jaanaa

magar qaraar se din kaT rahe ho.n yuu.N bhii nahii.n

lab-o-dahan bhii milaa guftaguu kaa fan bhii milaa
magar jo dil pe guzaratii hai kah sakuu.N bhii nahii.n


[lab = lips; dahan = mouth; guftaguu = conversation]
[fan = art/skill]

merii zubaa.N kii luknat se bad_gumaa.N na ho
jo tuu kahe to tujhe umr bhar miluu.N bhii nahii.n


[luknat = stammering; bad_gumaa.N = suspicious]

'Faraz' jaise ko_ii diyaa turbat-e-havaa chaahe hai
tuu paas aaye to mumkin hai mai.n rahuu.N bhii nahii.n
