" MEHR LAL SONI ZIA FATEHABADI "

Mehr Lal Soni, whose takhallus was Zia Fatehabadi, hailed from Fatehabad which is a small town in District Tarn Taran of Punjab. There is recorded evidence at Haridwar that his family has been continually living in Fatehabad from a period much before 1773 A.D. It is believed that his particular branch of Soni clan whose descendents are still residing there in their ancestral house had migrated from Rajasthan during the reign of the Mughal ruler Shahjahan.

Zia Fatehabadi was born on 9 February 1913 at Kapurthala as the eldest son of Munshi Ram Soni who was a Civil Engineer. Zia Fatehabadi was blessed with three elder sisters and two younger brothers. He completed his schooling as a student of Maharaja High School, Jaipur, whereafter he joined Forman Christian College, Lahore, and obtained his B.A.(Hons) in Persian and M.A. in English Literature degrees from Punjab University.

Encouraged by his mother, Shankari Devi, and assisted by Haya Jaipuri he had from the year 1925 onwards already commenced writing poems in Urdu. His first poem, a ghazal, ever to be published appeared in the April 1929 issue of "Chaman", Amritsar. It was during his college days that he came into close contact with Seemab Akbarabadi, Josh Malihabadi, Saghar Nizami, Meeraji, Khushtar Girami, Tilok Chand Mahroom, Sahir Hoshiarpuri, Manzar Siddiqi, Krishan Chander and Mukand Lal Sharma with all of whom his relationship lasted a life-time. The first three named influenced and shaped his poetic abilities and literary output. He became a shagird of Seemab Akbarabadi in 1930.

Zia Fatehabadi's name had gained prominence in 1929 itself, and in 1933, while he was still studying, Saghar Nizami had published Zia Fatehabadi's first collection of poems titled "Tullu", it was only after the publication of his second and first major collection of poems titled "Noor E Mashriq" that he became famous and earned a permanent place in the Urdu literary ranks. Since then his life and literary contributions have been critically appraised by scholars of repute and leading literary critics. Till date eleven collections of his poems have come to light. His poems and prose writings are in the ordinary-man's language, easily grasped and understood. His expression is sweet and lyrical. Outgrowing his college-days infatuation for Meera, his college- mate, Zia Fatehabadi soon turned his attention to the real world and spoke about the ordinary-man's feelings and plight in the manner that held out hope, soothed frayed nerves and comforted one's body and soul.

By nature he was a quiet person who virtually shunned publicity, who did not readily mix with people whom he did not know well, may be because of the unique responsible nature of his job at Reserve Bank of India that did not give him the desired liberty or may be because of his preference for his own inner little world he kept lit-up by the brightness provided by his intense study of the classical texts on Indian Thought and Philosophy. He had also studied Hindu Astrology.

Zia Fatehabadi died on 19 August 1986 at New Delhi leaving behind his wife,Raj Kumari, his five sons and their families, very many friends and admirers and the entire Urdu world grieving. His old friend, Sahir Hoshiarpuri, mourned and commemorated Zia Fatehabadi's demise through his following Qataa E Taariikh :-

" Jo kar sako na bayaan tum basurat e alfaaz "
" Fasaanaa e gham e hastii bachashm e nam kah lo "
" Zubaan o fikr o takhayyul jo saath de na sake "
" To 'dil' ko saath milaa kar 'gham e Zia' sah lo "

POEMS OF MEHR LAL SONI ZIA FATEHABADI

    Ghazal

Gham terii muhabbat kaa jab dil ko milaa hogaa
Ahsaas e wafaa saarii duniyaa ko huaa hogaa

Kuchh mastii e baadaa thii shaamil merii vahshat mein
Kuchh kaam nigaahon se saaqii ne liyaa hogaa

Jin ke liye duniyaa hai majbuur wafaaon par
Yaa rab kabhii unko bhii ahsaas e wafaa hogaa

Dil jiskaa rahaa hogaa mahruum muhabbat se
Duniyaa mein koii aisaa insaan na huaa hogaa

Kiranon se sanwaaregaa jab chaand gulistaan ko
Makhmuur fizaa hogii dil nagmaasaraa hogaa

Afsaanaa mere gham kaa afsaanaa e ibrat hai
Jisne bhii sunaa hogaa dil thaam liyaa hogaa

Kal raat jo tapakaa thaa junmbish se sitaaron kii
Paigham e muhabbat vo tum ne bhii sunaa hogaa

Saahil pe "Zia" duubii kishtii mere armaan kii
Maine to yeh sochaa thaa meraa bhii khudaa hogaa

RUBAIYAAT OF MEHR LAL SONI ZIA FATEHABADI
               ----0----

Yun uqade hayaat ke kahin khulte hain?

Besaii o amal nahin khulte hain

Uthatii hai jahaan husn ke chehare se naqaab

Asraar shabaab ke vahin khulte hain
                ----0----

Har roz nayaa gunaah kartaa hun main

Har jaadaa e isiyaan se guzartaa hun main

Marne kaa mujhe khauf nahin hai lekin

Aamaal ke anjaam se dartaa hun main
           ----0----

Tamhiid hii intehaa fasaane kii hai

Ye rasm e qadiim khone paane kii hai

Hastii hai nestii adam mera vujuud

Aanaa meraa daliil jaane kii hai
           ----0----

Aawaaz e junuun fitnaa e fariyaad sahii

Ikhalaas o wafaa kii daad bedaad sahii

Rakhtaa hun nigaah apne mustqabil par

Maazii mere imroz kii buniiyaad sahii
            ----0----

Munh ashqon se dhonaa bhii na aayaa mujhko

Daaman ko bhigonaa bhii na aayaa mujhko

Bedaad e jahaan sah gayaa hanste hanste

Rotaa hun ki ronaa bhii na aayaa mujhko
            ----0----

Chaltaa hai to aandhiyon pe ban aatii hai

Ruktaa hun to kaaynaat tham jaatii hai

Ye teraa hii jazbaa e amal hai e dil

Tadbiir jo taqdiir se takraatii hai
            ----0----

Baadaa mein mataa e hosh gholii hai kabhii

Ashqon se jabiin e shauq dholii hai kabhii

Har zarre mein sad hazaar suuraj roshan

Ae taalib e diid aankh kholii hai kabhii

       IZTIRAAB ( Sonnet )
-- Mehr Lal Soni Zia Fatehabadi

Sitaare aasmaan par muztariib hain khaak par zarre

Na unko chain haasil hai na inko chain haasil hai

Fizaan larzaan hawaa bekal sukuun naa aashanaa patte

Pariishaan bahar mein maujen hain aur betaab saahil hai

Gul o laalaa hain siinaa chaak baichainii kaa maatam hai

Fizaa mein thartharaatii hain nawaaen andaliibon kii

Asiir e iztiraab o dard o gham ye bazm e aalam hai

Tamannaon se takraatii hain aahen naashakiibon kii

Mujhe bhii fitrat e seemab ne bakhshii hai ik daulat

Mera dil bhii kisii kii yaad mein betaab rahtaa hai

Haqiqat mein yahii bechainiyan hain baiis e raahat

Isii taskiin kii maujon mein meraa har sh'er bahataa hai

Shabaab o iztiraab o ishq se takhliiq e hastii hai

Isii tasliis par qaayam nizaam e kaif o mastii hai
